2009 (MMIX) PCGS MS-70 PL Ultra High Relief $20 Double Eagle Coin

The $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle is one of the most renowned gold coins ever minted by the US Mint.

First introduced in 1907 during Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, it was designed for widespread circulation with a $20 face value and contained .9675 troy ounces of gold. However, production ceased in 1933 due to the economic downturn caused by the 1929 Wall Street crash.

In 2009, the US Mint revived the $20 Double Eagle as a unique, limited-edition release. This version featured 24-karat gold purity and an Ultra-High Relief design, enhancing its appeal and craftsmanship.

Today, SD Bullion offers the 2009 (MMIX) $20 Double Eagle Ultra High Relief Coin, which PCGS graded as an MS-70 PL coin.

  • The reverse design features the Bald Eagle;

The Design

The obverse portrays Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Double Eagle design. It depicts Lady Liberty marching forward as a symbol of national progress, carrying a torch and an olive branch, which symbolize enlightenment and peace. The sun's rays are rising in the background.

The artistry also features the Capitol Building on the lower left, the word “LIBERTY” on top, the year of issuance written in Roman letters on the lower right, and the stars encircling the whole design, representing the states.

The reverse design features a flying Bald Eagle above the sun. The inscriptions on this side are on top and read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”

The 2009 Edition

In the 2009 edition, the original Saint-Gaudens’ design was digitally mapped and imprinted in ultra-high relief. That created a 3-D effect on the design elements, making the most intricate details even more noticeable.

In addition, some design elements were included. The year of issuance in Roman letters reflects the year of mintage (2009), four stars were added to complete the current 50 states, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is now at the bottom of the reverse design.

A PCGS MS-70 PL Ultra High Relief Coin

Coin grading services like PCGS—Professional Coin Grading Service appraise and grade coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

MS means Mint State, referring to coins fabricated with the same shape as a popular business coin that remained uncirculated.

The term PL, or Prooflike, indicates a coin that exhibits mirrored fields that resemble a Proof coin. 70, the highest grade on the scale, is for a coin with no visible flaws.

Ultra-high relief is a coin design technique that creates a three-dimensional effect, with the design raised above the coin's edge.
