2003-W American Gold Eagle Proof 4-Coin Set 

Every year, the US Mint releases a unique 4-coin set with Proof American Gold Eagle Coins.

This original mint box consists of four 22k gold coins weighing 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz, in a total of 1.85 oz of gold content.

Because they were issued in the West Point branch, these Proof American Gold Eagles stamp the “W” mint mark on the obverse side.

The Coin’s Design

The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ design, in which Lady Liberty walks forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch, symbolizing the nation's march to progress, peace, and enlightenment.

The image is supplemented by the Capitol Building imprinted on the lower left, the word “LIBERTY” on top, the coin’s mintage year in Roman letters, the “W” mint mark on the right, and stars encircling the whole design.

The reverse design displays a family of Bald Eagles: the female Eagle cherishes its hatchling under her wing while the male Eagle perches their nest. 

The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arch over the image, which is flanked by the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The coin’s weight, metal content, and face value are engraved at the bottom rim.
