The Design

The American Eagle Program rescued the Walking Liberty obverse design from the 1917 Half Dollar coin.

In the image, Lady Liberty walks towards the sun, folded in the American flag, greeting the new immigrants with the oak and laurel branches she holds. The word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage complete the design.

John Mercanti designed the reverse. It features the Heraldic Eagle beneath thirteen stars, representing the original Thirteen Colonies. The Eagle carries the American Great Seal on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. 

It also contains the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR,” which inform face value, weight, metal content, and purity.

Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.

PCGS, which stands for Professional Coin Grading Service, is a renowned third-party service that assesses and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

According to the scale, PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
