2001 PCGS PR-69 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof Coin

The US Mint has been manufacturing Silver Eagle coins in bullion and proof versions annually since the debut of the American Eagles Program in 1986.

Proof coins display a mirror-like luster, which differs from other common bullion coins. Proof Silver Eagles contain one troy ounce of 99.9% fine silver, have a USD1 face value and are legal tender.

The US Mint issued 746,398 Proof Silver Eagles in 2001.

The Design

The Heraldic Eagle from the reverse side has thirteen stars above its head, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies. It also carries the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. 

The information which encircles the image refers to face value, weight, metal content, and purity. It reads “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.” 

The Walking Liberty from the obverse has the American flag draped on her shoulder, oak and laurel branches in one arm, and the other stretched in a welcome sign.

The engravings “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of issuance complete the design.

Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.

A PCGS PR-69 Coin 

PCGS, which stands for Professional Coin Grading Service, operates like other third-party entities in appraising and grading coins. They utilize the Sheldon Scale, a grading system ranging from 1 to 70, to evaluate coins based on their condition.

According to the scale, PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
