The $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins were first introduced to the US market in 1907 under President Roosevelt's administration. 

Produced by the US Mint for broad circulation, these coins carried legal tender status, had a denomination of $20, and contained .9675 oz of gold. 

The initial strikes of these coins are distinct because they do not include the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the reverse design, near the rising sun at the bottom rim, which was added in mid-1908.

The Design

Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed the obverse, which showcases Lady Liberty walking forward as a symbol of the national march to the future. The torch she carries represents enlightenment, and the olive branch represents peace. 

The word “LIBERTY” arches over the image while the sun's rays work as a backdrop. The Capitol Building is discreetly imprinted on the lower left, and the year of issuance is on the right.

The sun also appears as a background image in the reverse design, which features a flying Bald Eagle. The inscriptions on this side are on top and read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
