The Design

The obverse portrays the Native American Chief’s right profile, combining traces from Native American tribes, including the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. 

Accompanying engravings correspond to the word “LIBERTY” in front of the Native American’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials.

A giant American Bison, upstanding and facing left, covers the reverse side.

The word “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is engraved on top, along with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The other motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” lies near the animal’s muzzle. Beneath the image, read “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD,” referring to the coin’s denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content.
