81998 PCGS PR-69 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof Coin

One of the best-selling silver coins worldwide is the American Silver Eagle. Since their first release in 1986, collectors and investors have avidly searched for their bullion and proof versions.

Bullion and Proof Silver Eagles share the same weight, metal content, and purity features. They are one-ounce coins composed of 99.9% fine silver and feature emblematic patriotic designs starring Lady Liberty and the Heraldic Eagle. However, Proof Silver Eagles exhibit a unique mirror-like luster.

In 1998, the US Mint delivered 450,728 Proof Silver Eagle coins.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty walks towards the sun folded in the American flag. She holds oak and laurel branches in one arm as she welcomes new inhabitants to the New World. The inscriptions “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage are also imprinted on the image.

On the reverse, the Heraldic Eagle was depicted with thirteen stars over its head, representing the original colonies, the Great Seal on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. 

Face value, weight, metal content, and purity descriptions are inscribed and read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.

A PCGS PR-69 Coin 

PCGS, which stands for Professional Coin Grading Service, operates independently of sovereign mints. It evaluates and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

According to the scale, PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
