The 1994 Silver Eagle Design
The Silver Eagles honor two of America’s most recognizable national symbols: Lady Liberty, embodiment of the country’s ideals of freedom, enlightenment and free thought, and the bald eagle, representing the richness of our fauna and history.
Silver Eagle Obverse Design
The Walking Liberty received this moniker for the way Lady Liberty is represented, as if striding earnestly ahead. She holds her right arm forward, welcoming outsiders to appreciate the richness of the land. On her left arm she holds branches of oak, symbol of strength, morale, resistance, and knowledge. The American flag, wrapped around the figure’s shoulder, beautifully blows in the wind along with Her garment. We can see the word “LIBERTY” in spread-out letters arching above, and the mint year on the bottom. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” adorns the right-face of the design, next to the Walking Liberty.
That pattern was created by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916 for the Half Dollar coin. The US Mint released it for circulation until 1947. It was revitalized in 1986 for the American Silver Eagles.
Silver Eagle Reverse Design
The 1994 American Silver Eagle is embellished on the reverse by the heraldic eagle from the presidential seal. With a striped shield on its chest, the eagle has its wings wide open. It grasps branches of olive in one talon and arrows in the other. Both symbols together represent the duality of America’s desire for peace, while being always ready for war. A banner rests on the eagle’s beak with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. Above the eagle’s head are thirteen five-pointed stars, an old reliable representation of America’s origins with the Thirteen Colonies. Surrounding the outer rim are the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1 OZ. FINE SILVER ~ ONE DOLLAR”.
1994 Silver Eagles Mintage
The bullion version of the 1994 American Silver Eagle had a total mintage of 4,227,319, more than 2 million units less than the previous year, the 1993 Silver Eagle. That was the lowest mintage figure at the time for the program, and it is still the second lowest, behind only the 1996 Silver Eagle. Produced in San Francisco, bullion Silver Eagles bear no mint marks.
The 1994 Proof Silver Eagle had a low mintage as well, second only to the 1995-W Proof. They were produced in Philadelphia and bear the “P” mint mark.
The composition of both versions is of 99.93% silver and 0.07% copper with reeded edges. Proof coins display a cameo effect.
