1992 Silver Eagle Coin Design
The American Silver Eagle coin series is home to two of the world’s most popular coin designs. The 7th issue of the Silver Eagle retained the obverse and reverse designs featured since their inception in the market.
U.S Mint’s top-notch craftsmanship is visible on the intricate details on both sides of this silver bullion coin. The Silver Eagle’s sophisticated and appealing engravings are set to showcase some of America’s founding values and beliefs.
The 1992 American Silver Eagle features the famous “Walking Liberty” design on its obverse. Sculptor Adolph A. Weinman conceived the image, which depicts Goddess Liberty in stride towards the sun.
The 1916 half dollar first featured Weinman’s portrayal. It circulated until 1947, and the design was reintroduced in 1985 for the American Eagle Silver coin. It has since turned into a classic U.S coin design.
Weinman depicted Lady Liberty embraced by an American flag that flows with the wind. The Goddess is turned to the mountanous horizon, pacing towards the dawning sun. Her left hand holds branches of oak and laurel, while her right one reaches forward.
The national motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is engraved to the right of her leg. In spread out letters, the word “LIBERTY” arches along the upper half of the silver coin. Beneath Lady Liberty’s feet is the year of mintage, “1992”.
John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle design is visible on the coin’s reverse. It echoes the Great Seal of the United States. The image portrays a bald eagle, America’s national bird, embracing the country’s shield from behind.
A heraldic eagle is depicted grasping an olive branch on its right talon, and a bunch of arrows on its left talon. Above the bird’s head are engraved thirteen five-pointed stars, representing the original Thirteen Colonies. The eagle holds a banner in its beak, that spreads across its wings from left to right. On the banner, the national motto reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
Beneath the bird’s left talon is Mercanti’s signature, with the initials reading “JM”. Around the reverse, close to its rim, the inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “1 OZ FINE SILVER”, and “ONE DOLLAR”, the coin’s face value.
American Silver Eagle Mintage
The United States Mint introduced the American Eagle Program in 1986. It initiated the production of popular silver and gold bullion coins, the American Silver Eagle and the American Gold Eagle. The bullion program was widely well-received, with an increasing mintage over its first six years.
The 1992 Silver Eagle, however, saw a decrease in production compared to previous years. The 7th edition of this bullion coin had close to 1.5 million examples less than the previous issue. The total mintage of the 1992 Silver Eagle is of 5,540,068 examples. Such happened as the price of silver decreased for the second year consecutively. The Proof American Silver Eagle of the same year had close to 500,000 units minted.
However, contrary to what some may think, 1992 Silver Eagles are not uncommon. Due to other dates having similar mintage numbers, this silver bullion coin can be purchased by investors with relative ease.
