1991 PCGS PR-69 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof Coin

American Silver Eagle Proof coins are a symbol of high craftsmanship and numismatic value. Since their first release in 1986, they have been at the top of the list of the best-selling silver coins worldwide.

The US Mint offers Bullion and Proof Silver Eagles. They have the same weight, metal content, and purity features. They are one-ounce coins of 99.9% fine silver and showcase emblematic designs starring Lady Liberty and the Heraldic Eagle. However, unlike the bullion ones, Proof Silver Eagles exhibit a unique mirror-like luster.

In 1991, the US Mint delivered 511,924 Proof Silver Eagle coins.

The Design

Lady Liberty, portrayed in the obverse, walks towards the sun, folded in the American flag. Hence the coin’s moniker. She holds oak and laurel branches in one arm as she welcomes new inhabitants to the New World. The inscriptions “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage are also imprinted on the image.

On the reverse, the Heraldic Eagle has thirteen stars imprinted over its head, representing the original Thirteen Colonies. American Great Seal is on the eagle’s chest, arrows and olive branches are on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. 

The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR” refer to the coin’s face value, weight, metal content, and purity.

Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.

A PCGS PR-69 Coin 

PCGS, which stands for Professional Coin Grading Service, operates independently of sovereign mints. It evaluates and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

According to the scale, PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
