The 1990 Silver Eagle Design
The Walking Liberty design featured on the obverse of the coin is a long favorite of numismatics and collectors. It returns to the American Silver Eagle series, revitalized from the 1916 US Half Dollar that circulated until 1947. The reverse portrays the heraldic eagle as represented by John Mercanti in this rendition from 1986.
Silver Eagle Obverse Design
The obverse of the Silver Eagles feature Lady Liberty striding earnestly forward with her right arm stretched. The design was originally from the US Half Dollar until 1947. Weinman’s creation was always a public favorite and one of the most beloved designs in US coinage history. Thus, in 1986, with the creation of the American Eagle Program, the US Mint opted to revamp the design for the silver bullion coin and its proof version.
Other symbolism present in the design includes branches of oak on Lady Liberty’s arm, representing the country’s strength and persistence. The US flag is wrapped around the figure’s shoulder, as if a warm embrace and the sun rising in the horizon, referencing that new opportunities come each new dawn in this land.
The word “LIBERTY” appears on top and the mint year below. On the right face of the design is the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST”.
Silver Eagle Reverse Design
It is a legal demand that the reverse of the silver eagles portray a representation of the bald eagle, hence the name of the program. The 1990 American Silver Eagle depicts the heraldic eagle by John M. Mercanti. In his design, Mercanti displayed the bald eagle with its wings wide open and a striped shield on its chest. Above the eagle’s head there are thirteen stars, forming a triangular shape. They represent the original Thirteen Colonies. On the eagle’s beak is a banner with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, meaning “OF ALL, ONE”. The motto usually appears near the thirteen stars, symbolizing the union between the states. The eagle grasps olive branches and arrows with its talons, indicating America is always ready for war, but with a desire for peace.
Surrounding the design are the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “1 OZ. FINE SILVER” and “ONE DOLLAR”.
1990 Silver Eagles Mintage
For the 1990 mintage, the US Mint produced 5,840,000 units of the silver bullion coins and 695,510 Proof Silver Eagles. Both figures represented an increase from the previous years as silver demand grew in the beginning of the 1990s.
Both coins contain 99.93% silver and 0.07% copper with reeded edges and equal dimensions: diameter of 40.6 mm (1.598 inches), thickness of 2.98 mm (0.117 inches), and weight of 31.101 grams (1 troy ounce).
