The 1989 Silver Eagle Design

The Silver Eagle has a classic design that has been immortalized by its success in sales. Silver bullion investors flock to these coins like bees to a honeypot. The high quality of the US Mint products is internationally recognized as industry-leading. In addition, these silver coins carry a semi-numismatic value and, as such, can share a market with collectors as well, making them an incredibly liquid option for those looking to amass silver bullion.

Silver Eagle Obverse Design

The obverse features a design from 1916, a pattern first used on the Half Dollar coin in circulation until 1947. Adolph A. Weinman was the creator of the design which came to be known as the Walking Liberty.

The name references how Lady Liberty appears striding on the design, with the rising sun in the background. Her right arm stretches forward in bestowal of the spirit of liberty. Her left arm holds branches of oak, a symbol of America’s strength and endurance. The word “LIBERTY” appears above the effigy, and the mint year is written below. A recurrent inscritpion in American coinage is the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST”, seen here on the right face of the design, behind Lady Liberty’s striding legs.

Silver Eagle Reverse Design

The 1989 American Silver Eagle portrays the original reverse design by John M. Mercanti. The US Mint released a new reverse pattern with the 2021 Type 2 Silver Eagles that has completely revitalized the design. However, the 1989 version still depicts the heraldic eagle. This representation of the national bird shows it with its head facing left (in the viewer’s perspective) and its wings wide open. In front of the eagle’s chest, we can see a striped shield, like in the presidential seal. The bird holds a banner on its beak with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, meaning “of many, one”, representing the unity of the States.

Above the eagle’s head, there are thirteen five-pointed stars, representing the original colonies. And on the eagle’s talons rest a bunch of arrows and an olive branch. These two symbols together represent the duality between the country’s desire for peace and constant awareness of war.

Surrounding the eagle design is the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1 OZ. FINE SILVER ~ ONE DOLLAR”.

1989 Silver Eagles Mintage

1989 saw a decrease in the price of silver and, as a consequence, a slight increase in silver bullion production by the United States Mint.

The US Mint produced 5,203,327 American Silver Eagle bullion coins, along with 617,964 Proof Silver Eagles in 1989. Both coins contain 99.93% silver and 0.07% copper. The 1989 Proof Silver Eagle bears the “S” mintmark, whereas the bullion version has none, in spite being minted in the San Francisco Mint as well.

Both versions contain reeded edges and equal dimensions: diameter of 40.6 mm (1.598 inches), thickness of 2.98 mm (0.117 inches), and weight of 31.101 grams (1 troy ounce).
