1854 NGC AU-50 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin - Small Date

The US Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin was issued as the official $20 coin from 1849 to 1907 and contained 0.9675 Troy oz of gold.

The fourth Chief Engraver of the US Mint, James B. Longacre, was in charge of giving these Pre-1933 gold coins Lady Liberty’s effigy and Heraldic Eagle’s depiction as designs. 

In 1854, the US Mint delivered slightly different $20 Liberty Double Eagle gold coins. Some were imprinted with the year of issuance in large letters, and others in small letters.

The Design

The obverse features Lady Liberty wearing a tiara inscribed "LIBERTY." It is encircled by thirteen six-pointed stars symbolizing the original Thirteen Colonies. The year of mintage, engraved in small letters, is beneath Liberty’s effigy at the bottom rim.

On the reverse, the Heraldic Eagle was depicted with spread wings, clutching arrows in its talons, the national shield on its chest, and the banner "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak. 

The artistry displays the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the coin's face value of "TWENTY DOLLARS."
