1851 NGC MS-65 $1 Liberty Head Gold Coin - Type I

Between 1849 and 1854, the United States Mint produced $1 Liberty Head Gold Coins as the country’s official circulating dollar coin. Designed by James Longacre, each coin contains .0483 Troy oz of gold.

The $1 Liberty Head coin saw three design variations during its production. The Type I design, minted for only six years, was later replaced by the Indian Princess design. As a result, well-preserved Type I coins are scarce and highly sought after in the numismatic market.

SD Bullion offers 1851 $1 Liberty Head Gold Coins of Type I, graded as MS-65 by NGC.

Coin Highlights

  • Evaluated, encapsulated, and graded as an MS-65 coin by NGC;

  • Contains .0483 oz of actual gold content;

  • Produced by the US Mint;

  • Pre-1933 American gold coin;

  • The smallest gold dollar ever produced;

  • Designed by James B. Longacre.

The Design

The obverse portrays Lady Liberty looking left, wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY” and encircled by thirteen stars, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies.

The reverse displays the coin’s face value of “1 DOLLAR” and the year of its issuance, surrounded by a wreath and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”

An NGC MS-65 Coin

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale as a parameter, apart from sovereign mints.

An MS-65 coin means that the analyzed coin has the same format as a business coin but still displays high-quality luster despite its aged mintage. Minor contact marks and scatters may be noticeable, but the coin's overall quality is above average.
