The Obverse Design

The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on the upper rim. The Capitol Building is on the lower left, and the coin’s mintage year is on the right.

Reverse Design Type 1

The debuting reverse design, which Miley Busiek designed, showcases a family of Bald Eagles. In the image, a female eagle cherishes its hatchling under her wing while the male one perches their nest. 

The word “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is engraved on top, and the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are aside. Weight, metal content, and face value are at the bottom, described as “1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD—5 DOLLARS.”

Reverse Design Type 2

In 2021, the US Mint released a new reverse design created by Jennie Norris to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle Program.

Norris’ design showcases the majestic bald eagle in a close-up depiction with a deep gaze and highlighted hooked beak.

The update retained the same inscriptions from the original design: the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” weight, metal content, and face value described as “1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD—5 DOLLARS.”
