The Design

The obverse showcases Marianne, the national personification of France, designed by the esteemed engraver J.C. Chaplain. Her portrait represents liberty, reason, and the ideals of the French Republic. Besides the artist’s name on the lower left, the design includes “REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE.”

The reverse features the “le coq gaulois,” the Gallic Rooster. The rooster is known as an unofficial symbol of France, an emblematic of French resilience and heritage, and it is depicted in this design in full body.

The inscription arching over the image refers to the French Revolution slogan. “LIBERTE.EGALITE.FRATERNITE,” which translates to Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity, and on the bottom read the coin’s face value of “20 Fcs.”
