PCGS MS-70 1 of 500 Foil Label James Earl Fraser Signature 2017 American Gold Buffalo Coin
The US Mint introduced American Gold Buffalo Coins in 2006. They were the first 24k gold coin produced in the US.
Gold Buffalos weigh a full troy ounce of 99.99% pure gold. They are produced exclusively at the West Point branch and hold legal tender status, guaranteed by the US federal government.

The Design
The giant American Bison depicted on the reserve side resembles a Buffalo, hence the moniker. It is accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” which lies near the Buffalo’s muzzle.
The coin’s face value, weight, fineness, and metal content description read “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.”
The obverse is inspired by James Earle Fraser’s Indian Head Nickel coin, created in 1913, which features a Native American Chief’s right profile.
The bust unites traces from Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. The word “LIBERTY” is inscribed on the front of the Native’s forehead. The year of issuance and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials, are on the lower left.
A PCGS MS-70 Coin
Third-party grading services, like PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service, use the Sheldon Grading Scale to appraise and certify coins from 1 to 70 based on their condition.
MS refers to a Mint State coin, which means the coin is a regular business strike that has never been in circulation. Grade 70 is attributed to flawless coins.
James Earl Fraser’s Signature
Some of the PCGS seals have unique features. James Earl Fraser was the artist in charge of important designs imprinted on American coins, including the Indian Head Nickel Coin, produced by the US Mint from 1913 to 1938, which inspired the Gold Buffalo Coin design. PCGS pays tribute to his deeds, reproducing Fraser’s signature in only 500 foil labels.
