The Design
Saint-Gaudens’ design portrays Lady Liberty, the feminine guise of the nation, walking forward carrying a torch and an olive branch as a symbol of the nation's future development, with enlightenment and peace.
The inscription “LIBERTY” is on top, the Capitol Building is imprinted on the lower left, and the year of issuance is on the right.
On the reverse side, the Bald Eagle flies above the sun. The inscriptions on this side read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
