1993-P US Gold and Silver Eagle Proof Set (0.85 oz Gold)

Celebrating the 200th anniversary of its foundation, the Philadelphia Mint prepared a unique coin set in 1993 composed of Proof Silver and Gold Eagle coins.

Established in 1792, the Philadelphia Mint was the first official mint of the United States, playing a crucial role in the nation’s coinage history. As the backbone of American currency production, it set the standard for quality and innovation in minting. Over the centuries, the Philadelphia Mint has produced some of the most iconic coins in U.S. history, making it a fitting place to commemorate significant milestones, such as the 200th anniversary celebrated with the 1993-P US Gold and Silver Eagle Proof Set.

This set contains three samples of Gold Eagles—a half-ounce, a quarter-ounce, and a tenth-ounce—a US Silver Eagle and a commemorative Bicentennial Silver medal specially made for the occasion.

They are all proof coins, enhancing their designs with brilliant black surfaces contrasting frosted images. They are also imprinted with the Philadelphia Mint “P” mint mark and are housed in a deluxe velvet case with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Today, you can find the 1993-P US Gold and Silver Eagle Proof Set at SD Bullion.

The US Gold Eagle Design

The obverse design, designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, features Lady Liberty striding forward with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. It symbolizes the nation's journey toward peace and enlightenment.

The design imprints the Capitol Building, the word “LIBERTY,” and the coin’s mintage year.

The reverse showcases Miley Busiek's female eagle protecting her hatchling beneath her wing while the male eagle watches from their nest.

It also features the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The description of weight, metal content, and face value vary according to the coin.

The US Silver Eagle Design

The obverse features Lady Liberty walking toward the sun's rays. She holds oak and laurel branches in one arm while extending her other in a welcoming gesture, with the American flag draped over her shoulder.

The word "LIBERTY," the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the year of mintage are included.

The reverse showcases the majestic eagle with the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches in its talons, and a banner with the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak. Thirteen stars above the eagle's head represent the original colonies.

It also contains the text "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR," indicating the coin's face value, weight, metal content, and purity, along with the "P" mint mark.

The Bicentennial Silver Medal

This medal contains .76 oz of silver and bears the U.S. Mint engraver Thomas D. Rogers’s design.

The obverse displays John Ward Dunsmore’s painting “Inspecting the First Coinage” with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and David Rittenhouse at the first US Mint facility in Philadelphia.

It is accompanied by the engravings “UNITED STATES MINT,” “Bicentennial,” and “PHILADELPHIA.”

The reverse showcases 15 different US coins including the Flowing Hair Cent, Wheat Ears Lincoln, Jefferson Nickel, Buffalo Nickel, Mercury Dime, Roosevelt Dime, Liberty Seated Quarter, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, Walking Liberty Half Dollar, Bicentennial Eisenhower Dollar, Statue of Liberty Centennial Dollar, Heraldic Eagle Reverse from the Gold Eagle, XXV Olympiad Gold Commemorative, and the Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle.

In addition to the designer’s initials, it bears the Philadelphia Mint's “P” mint mark.
