NGC/PCGS MS-66 $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin - Random Year
The US Mint first issued St. Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins in 1907, during President Theodore Roosevelt’s government, which means this coin is over 80 years old.
Like several other Pre-1933 Gold Coins, the St. Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin was produced for widespread circulation, weighing .9675 oz of gold, Bearing legal tender status, and a denomination of $20.
Because of the economic collapse of the 1930s, only some of these coins survived the confiscation act and the popular practice of melting them down for their gold content due to high inflation in gold prices.
In addition, these coins have been graded by the most recognized third-party services worldwide, guaranteeing the coin’s condition based on the Sheldon Grading Scale.
Coin Highlights
- Contains 90% gold purity (.9675 Troy oz of gold bullion);
- Bears face value of USD 20, backed by the US Federal Government;
- Evaluated, graded, and encapsulated as an MS-66 coin by the NGC or the PCGS;
- Pre-1933 American Gold Coin;
- St. Gaudens’ Liberty design features the obverse;
- The reverse design features the Bald Eagle.
The Design
The obverse is a creation of Augustus Saint-Gaudens and features Liberty, the feminine personification of the nation, walking forward as a symbol of a march to the future. The torch she carries means enlightenment and olive branch, peace.
The sun's rays work as a backdrop. The Capitol Building is discreetly imprinted on the lower left, the year of issuance on the right, and the word “LIBERTY” arches over the image.
The reverse design showcases a flying Bald Eagle overlapping the sun's rays. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the coin’s face value of “TWENTY DOLLARS” are on top.
An NGC or PCGS MS-66 Coin
The PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service and the NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company are third-party services that use the Sheldon Grading Scale to classify coins according to their condition at the moment of appraisal within particular grades.
The scale ranks coins from 1 to 70.
A 66 grade indicates that the coin may have contact marks and signs of wear and tear, but they are above average quality of strike and preserved original mint luster.
