NGC/PCGS MS-65 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin - Random Year

The US Mint introduced the $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin in 1850 and produced it until 1907, when the Liberty Head was replaced by Saint-Gaudens’ obverse design.

These coins were produced for widespread circulation at the time. They still hold legal tender status with a $20 face value and gold content of .9675 Troy oz.

The Liberty Double Eagle is one of the Pre-1933 Gold Coins affected by the economic collapse of the 1930s. Due to the high inflation of gold prices, many people would hoard these coins and melt them down for their gold content before the Executive Order 6102 in 1933, which forbade the ownership of gold bullion in the US.

These samples that survived became valuable for numismatic and historical value. Through this purchasing option, you are guaranteed to receive a $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle Gold Coin, graded MS-65, by either PCGS or NGC, the two most prominent coin grading services in the world.

Coin Highlights

The Design

The Liberty Head design is a creation of James B. Longacre. It consists of a feminine left-profile bust, wearing a tiara engraved “LIBERTY,” surrounded by thirteen five-pointed stars, referring to the Thirteen Original Colonies. The year of issuance is at the bottom rim.

The reverse design showcases the Heraldic Eagle, with widespread wings, the national shield in front of its chest, arrows in its talons, and the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak.

“UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arches over the image, followed by the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,“ and the “TWENTY DOLLARS face value engraved at the bottom.

An NGC or PCGS MS-65 Coin

The PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service and the NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company provide third-party coin grading services. Coins are appraised and receive a grade according to the Sheldon Scale.

This scale ranks coins from 1 to 70. The grade 70 is attributed to flawless coins.

For both services, an MS-65 coin means that the analyzed coin has the same format as a business coin that still displays high-quality luster despite its aged mintage. Minor contact marks and scatters may be noticeable, but the coin has an overall quality above the average.
