The Design

The Liberty Head design is a creation of James B. Longacre. It consists of a feminine left-profile bust, wearing a tiara engraved “LIBERTY,” surrounded by thirteen five-pointed stars, referring to the Thirteen Original Colonies. The year of issuance is at the bottom rim.

The reverse design showcases the Heraldic Eagle, with widespread wings, the national shield in front of its chest, arrows in its talons, and the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak.

“UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arches over the image, followed by the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,“ and the “TWENTY DOLLARS face value engraved at the bottom.
