The U.S. Mint struck Indian Gold Eagle Coins regularly from 1907 to 1919, and intermittently up until 1933, at its mints in Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

These Indian Eagle gold coins contain 0.48375 oz of gold, feature a design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and have a USD 10 face value.

During the economic turmoil of the 1930s, their gold content led many to hoard or melt them down, significantly decreasing the number that survived in circulation.

The Design

The obverse showcases Lady Liberty wearing a feathered headdress, representing Native American heritage, and is inscribed “LIBERTY.” The year of issuance is engraved beneath Liberty’s bust.

The reverse depicts the majestic eagle standing on an arrow wrapped around an olive branch. The design is engraved with the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the coin’s face value.

In some strikes, the reverse design may also feature the “IN GOD WE TRUST” motto and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
