The Obverse Design
The American Eagle Program rescued Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Coin design to the obverse of Gold Eagles.
Lady Liberty marches forward in the image, carrying a torch and an olive branch, symbolizing the nation's evolution toward progress, peace, and enlightenment.
It also features the word “LIBERTY” on top, the Capitol Building on the lower left, and the coin’s mintage year on the right.
Type 1 Reverse Design
The debuting reverse design is Miley Busiek's creation. In the image, a female eagle cherishes its hatchling under her wing while the male one perches their nest.
The image also displays the coin’s description of weight, metal content, and face value, which reads “1 OZ. FINE GOLD—50 DOLLARS,” the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
Type 2 Reverse Design
The second reverse design stamped in Gold Eagle Coins premiered in 2021 when the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle Program was celebrated.
It consists of Jennie Norris’ bald eagle portrayal in a close-up depiction with a deep gaze and a highlighted hooked beak.
The inscriptions are the same as the inaugural reverse design.
Burnished Coins
A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.
An MS/SP-70 coin for NGC and PCGS
NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) and PCGS (Professional Coins Grading Service) are globally renowned for appraising and certifying coins according to the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.
For both third-party grading services, SP-70 stands for Specimen-70, which describes a perfect coin with absolutely no flaws.
