Between 1840 and 1907, the United States issued the $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle Coins as part of its circulating currency, each containing .12094 ounces of gold. 

The design, created by Christian Gobrecht, remained in use for an impressive 67 years, making it the longest-running design in the history of American coinage.

The Design

The obverse consists of Lady Liberty’s portrayal, wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY.” The stars encircling her bust represent the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of mintage is inscribed at the bottom.

The reverse features the Heraldic Eagle with outstretched wings, the national shield on its chest, arrows, and an olive branch on its talons.

The inscriptions only describe the nation’s name and the coin’s face value.
