2025 1 oz 225th Anniversary of Australian Proclamation Pillar Dollar Gold Coin
In celebration of a landmark in Australian coinage history, the Perth Mint crafted the 2025 1 oz 225th Anniversary of Proclamation Pillar Dollar Gold Coin.
The Proclamation of 1800 established rules and standards for the different types of currencies, providing colonial Australia with economic stability and a more systematized way for trade.
The coin's design pays homage to the famous Spanish Pillar Dollar, a very important coin for not only Australian colonial commerce, but even moreso the American colonies and the ecomoney of a young United States. The Spanish Pillar Dollar, also known as the "Piece of Eight" or Real de a Ocho, was a silver coin minted by the Spanish Empire from the late 16th century through the 19th century. Widely recognized for its consistent weight and purity, the Pillar Dollar became one of the first truly global currencies, extensively used in international trade across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and beyond. Its design featured two hemispheres between the Pillars of Hercules, symbolizing Spain’s claim to both the Old and New Worlds, with a banner reading Plus Ultra ("More Beyond"). Due to its reliability and widespread acceptance, the coin heavily influenced the development of other currencies, including the United States dollar, and it played a crucial role in shaping global commerce during the age of empire and exploration.
This is a limited commemorative bullion issue. This coin contains 1 Troy oz of 999.9 pure gold and showcases an intricate design of historical value.

The obverse showcases Dan Thorne’s portrait of King Charles III and inscriptions detailing the coin’s weight, purity, and face value.
On the reverse, two hemispheres sit beneath the Spanish Crown, symbolizing the Old and New Worlds. The Pillars of Hercules flank these, each wrapped in a banner reading “PLVS VLTRA,” Latin for “more beyond.”
Encircling the design is the Latin phrase “VTRAQUE VNUM,” meaning “both are one,” reflecting the Spanish empire’s vision of a united world.
The “M” mintmark pays tribute to the Mexico City Mint, where many Spanish coins used in early colonial Australia were originally struck.
The Pillar Dollar Commemorative Coin
This coin commemorates the historic Spanish Pillar Dollar, also known as the peso or piece of eight, which was widely used in global trade during the colonial period.
In 1800, facing a shortage of currency in New South Wales, Governor Philip Gidley King declared these coins legal tender in the colony. Later, Governor Macquarie expanded on this by transforming the imported Spanish reales into the famous "holey dollars" and "dumps," marking the beginning of Australian coin production.
