The Design

Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed the obverse of gold eagles, which showcases Lady Liberty, the feminine personification of America, walking forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch, symbolizing the nation's march to progress, peace, and enlightenment.

The design also features the Capitol Building, the word “LIBERTY” on top, the coin’s mintage year, and the “W” mint mark. Stars encircle the whole design.

Jennie Norris created the current reverse design for the 35th Anniversary of the American Eagle Program. It depicts the majestic eagle in a left-profile close-up with a hooked beak and a staring gaze. 

The coin’s face value, weight, and metal content are engraved on this side, along with the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

A PCGS PR-70 DC First Day of Issue Coin 

PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service and similar third-party services appraise and grade coins using the Sheldon Scale as a parameter.

PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes. It exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. The expression “DCAM” or Deep Cameo means this contrast is deeper and more intense than in other proof coins.

Grade 70 is the highest and is attributed to coins with no visible marks.

PCGS considers “First Day of Issue” a coin purchased from the US Mint on the very first day it was made publicly available.
