2024-W NGC MS-70 First Day Of Issue 1 oz American Gold Eagle Burnished Coin

The first Gold Eagle produced by the US Mint was a 1 Troy oz gold coin. In 1986, the US Gold Eagle and its counterpart, the Silver Eagle, premiered in the bullion market as the debuting coins of the American Eagles Program.

The US Mint extended the Gold Eagle Collection by adding fractional sizes and different options of coin finishes.

These coins, in particular, are burnished versions, struck in the West Point branch, and carry the “W” mint mark. The blanks used in their minting underwent a special treatment process called burnishing, which cleans them from undesired oxides, resulting in a matte finish with more vivid design details.

Today, SD Bullion offers 2024-W 1 oz Burnished American Gold Eagles, taken among those available for purchase in the US Mint on day #1, sealed and certified by NGC as an MS-70 coin.

  • IRAs eligible;
  • Lady Liberty, designed by Saint-Gaudens, features the obverse;
  • The Bald Eagle featured by Jennie Norris is on the reverse.

The Design

The obverse was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It features Lady Liberty marching forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch. The march symbolizes the nation's evolution to progress, peace, and enlightenment.

It also contains the Capitol Building, the word “LIBERTY,” and the coin’s mintage year. The “W” mint mark is on the right.

The reverse displays Jennie Norris’ majestic bald eagle in a close-up depiction with a deep gaze and a highlighted hooked beak.

The inscriptions on this side are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1 OZ. FINE GOLD—50 DOLLARS,” describing weight, metal content, and face value.

Burnished Coins

A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.

An NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue Coin

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is globally renowned for certifying coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin crafted in the format of a business circulation coin. Since it has never been in circulation, the coin has no sign of wear, tear, or scratching, which grants it a 70 grade.

NGC considers “First Day of Issue” a coin purchased from the US Mint on the very first day it was made publicly available.
