The U.S. Mint commemorated the end of World War I with a silver coin that embodies themes of hope and rebirth. 

Released in 1921, the Peace Dollar was the official dollar coin in circulation until 1928, with a brief return from 1934 to 1935. 

In celebration of its 100th anniversary, a special edition was introduced in 2021, and due to its widespread appeal, it became a regular issue. 

The proof finish on these coins beautifully enhances the serene portrait of Lady Liberty and the striking eagle, highlighting intricate design details.

The Design

Artist Anthony de Francisci designed Peace Dollars in 1921. The obverse portrays Lady Liberty wearing a radiant crown inscribed “LIBERTY.” The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the year of issuance are also part of the design.

The reverse showcases a peaceful bald eagle resting on a rock, holding an olive branch in its talon. 

Additional inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “PEACE.” The “S” mint mark is near the coin’s face value.

An NGC PF-70 UC First Day of Issue Coin 

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company), which operates independently of sovereign mints, appraises and certifies coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

NGC considers “First Day of Issue” a coin purchased from its original mint on the very first day of its official release.

The initials PF stand for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes. It exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 

The expression “UC,” “UCAM,” or Ultra Cameo means this contrast is deeper and more intense than in other proof coins. Grade 70 is attributed to flawless coins.
