American Silver Eagles are the official silver coin in the US. The US Mint introduced them to the bullion market in 1986. They weigh 1 Troy oz of 99.9% fine silver.

The Design

The obverse depicts Lady Liberty, with the American flag draped on her shoulder, walking towards the sun, carrying oak branches in one arm and welcoming new inhabitants with the other arm stretched. 

The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on top, the year of issuance is at the bottom, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is on the lower right.

The reverse showcases the Bald Eagle perched on a branch with spread wings. Engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “1 OZ,” “FINE SILVER,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” encircle the whole reverse image.

An NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue Coin 

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company and other renowned third-party services work independently from sovereign mints to certify coins using the Sheldon Scale. The scale ranks coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.

It considers “First Day of Issue,” a coin purchased from the US Mint on the very first day it was made publicly available.
