- Struck in the first 30 days of the US Mint’s release;
- Bears a face value of USD 50, backed by the US Government;
- 2024 marks the 19th edition of the Gold Buffalo Coin;
- The obverse features a Native American Chief from the Indian Head Nickel circulating coins;
- The American Bison is on the reverse side.
The Design
Inspired by James Earle Fraser’s Indian Head Nickel, issued in 1913, the Gold Buffalo obverse design features a Native American Chief’s right profile.
It has traces from different American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. The word “LIBERTY” is engraved in front of the Native’s forehead, while the year of mintage and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials, are on the lower left.
As the coin’s moniker suggests, the Buffalo coin depicts a giant American Bison in a left-side upstanding position that resembles a Buffalo on the reverse side. The image covers most of its surface along with the coin’s information.
The inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arches over the buffalo, along with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The other motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is near the animal’s muzzle. Last, the inscriptions “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD,” which refers to face value, weight, fineness, and metal content.
The Sheldon Grading Scale
NGC stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company, and it is a third-party service for evaluating coins and grading them according to the Sheldon Grading Scale.
The Scale is named after its creator, Dr. Willian Herbert Sheldon, and provides coins with a certain status based on their condition and authenticity. From 70 to 1, the highest grade it gets, the more flawless the coin is.
An MS-70 Coin
An MS-70 coin is referred to as a perfect coin.
MS stands for Mint State, and it refers to a coin made in the same format as a business circulation sample. However, it has never been in circulation, so it has no signs of wear, tear, scratching, or contact with other coins.
