2023 1 oz Tudor Beast Bull of Clarence Gold Coin
The Royal Mint is a benchmark regarding the production of high-standard coins in the United Kingdom. Besides their famous Britannia Series, the Mint strikes the 24k Gold Tudor Beast Coins.
Inspired by the Hampton Court Palace stone sculptures, the series has ten regularly struck coins that symbolize British royal ancestry.
The Bull of Clarence, on the coin’s reverse design, is one of them and is associated to the marriage of Henry VII to Elizabeth of York and the union of Lancaster’s and York’s houses.
And for the first time, the 2023 edition stamps King Charles III on the obverse.

The Design
The effigy of King Charles III premieres in the series through His Majesty’s official portrait signed by Martin Jennings.
The inscriptions encircling the Monarch’s bust read: “CHARLES III,” “100 POUNDS” referring to the coin’s face value, and the Latin initials “D.G.REX.F.D.,” which stands for “Dei Gracia Rex,” by the Grace of God, King.
The reverse design features the Bull of Clarence, designed by David Lawrence. The 2023 design provides the beast with a modern display, but it is still a Heraldic Bull protecting the National Shield, as inspired by the stone sculpture at Hampton Court Palace.
The background consists of a chain mail animation texture. And the engravings on the outer rim refer to the coin’s name, weight, metal content, fineness, and year of issuance. They read: “BULL OF CLARENCE. 1 oz. 999.9. FINE GOLD. 2023.”
The Tudor Beast Series
The ten beasts lined up on the Palace Moat’s Bridge represent royal ancestry. Henry VIII, who succeeded his father Henry VII, became the second Tudor of the dynasty and commissioned the construction of these stone sculptures.
The Bull of Clarence is the third beast featured in the series, which also comprises The Seymour Panther, The Lion of England, the Yale of Beaufort, the Tudor Dragon, the Greyhound of Richmond, the Royal Dragon, the Seymour Unicorn, the Queen's Panther, and the Queen’s Lion.
