Famous for its stunning designs, the Gold Philharmonic Series are among the most sought-after gold coins available in the bullion market.
The series debuted with the 1 oz coin in 1989, and the series soon got fractional sizes to expand the successful collection.
The Austrian Mint included the ½ oz coin in the production line in 1994 to accompany the other fractional ¼ oz, 1/10 oz sizes.
The Gold Philharmonic Series honors the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which makes their design pure classical music.

The Design
The motif is a creation of Chief Engraver Thomas Pesendorfen, inspired by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
The obverse showcases the pipe organ settled in the Golden Hall of Vienna or the Musikverein. The image depicts a recovered organ after its destruction during a WWII bombing. The information inscribed in German refers to the country and year of issuance, the coin’s weight, metal content, fineness, and denomination.
The reverse displays eight classical instruments present in the Vienna Orchestra. The ones depicted are violins, a cello, the Viennese horn, a bassoon, and a harp. The Orchestra’s name lies on the upper rim.
The Vienna Orchestra
The Vienna Philharmonics is one of the most renowned orchestras worldwide. To maintain their high quality, each member undergoes a rigid selection process, including skills evaluations.
The origin of the orchestra dates back to approximately 1842, with Otto Nicolai. The German Maestro founded the Philharmonic Academy as an independent institution based on the members’ democratic decisions.
Traditionally, every January 1st since 1941, the Orchestra presents the Vienna New Year’s Concert dedicated to the Strauss family, an internationally expected event for classical music fans.
