The Design
The motif of the series is inspired by classical music. Orchestra instruments cover both sides of the coin.
The obverse displays the pipe organ from 1872 in Musikverein. The war destroyed the Golden Hall and the organ, but the reconstruction of the building walls and the organ itself became a symbol of resistance to the nation. The organ depicted is new, but the image kept some of the original traces. The inscriptions written in German refer to the nation’s name, the coin’s metal content, weight, fineness, year of mintage, and denomination.
The reverse showcases eight essential classical instruments that an orchestra usually comprises, mainly the Vienna Orchestra: violins, a cello, the Viennese horn, a bassoon, and a harp. The Orchestra’s name lies on the upper rim.
The Gold Philharmonic Series
In 1989, the series debuted in the bullion market with the 1 oz gold coin, followed by its fractional ¼ oz. The success of the Gold Philharmonic's first strikes led to the expansion of the series, which gradually included the 1/10 oz coin in 1991, the ½ oz in 1994, and, completing the series, the 1/25 oz in 2014 for the 25th anniversary of the series.
