2022 NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coin - Mike Castle Label
The US Mint first delivered Gold Eagles in 1986 as a debuting gold coin from the American Eagle Program and the official gold coin of the United States.
The 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle is the heaviest fractional coin of the series and stamps the standard design as its counterparts: Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Lady Liberty on the obverse and Jennie Norris' intricately detailed bald eagle on the reverse.
These coins, in particular, are 1/2 oz Gold Eagles, taken from the US Mint on day #1 of their official release and sealed by NGC as MS-70 samples.
In addition, this NGC label carries Congressman Mike Castle’s signature. Mike Castle, former Governor of Delaware and member of the US House of Representatives, is directly responsible for some of the most essential US coin programs, such as the 50 State Quarters Program, the Sacagawea Dollar, the Presidential Dollar Series, the American Platinum Eagle, America the Beautiful Quarters® Program, and others.

The Design
The obverse portrays Augustus Saint-Gaudens' design of Lady Liberty striding forward, holding a torch and an olive branch. This march is a symbol of the nation's journey toward progress, peace, and enlightenment. It also contains the Capitol Building, the word "LIBERTY," and the coin's mintage year.
On the reverse, Jennie Norris's new reverse design features the majestic bald eagle in a close-up, highlighting its intense gaze and prominent hooked beak.
The accompanying inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD—25 DOLLARS,” describing weight, metal content, and face value.
An NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue coin
NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) is globally acknowledged for its expertise in appraising and grading coins. They utilize the Sheldon Grading Scale, which rates coins on a scale from 1 to 70 based on their condition.
According to NGC, a “First Day of Issue” coin was purchased from its original mint on the first day of its release and submitted to NGC appraisal.
MS or Mint State is a coin with the same format as a business circulation that remained uncirculated. Grade 70 is attributed to flawless coins.
