The Design

Augustus Saint Gaudens created the obverse design back in 1916, which showcases Lady Liberty's front-face portrait. She walks forward to the future with the sun rays in the background and the stars representing the national states around the image. 

The word “LIBERTY” arches over her as she carries a torch and an olive branch, representing light and peace. The year of mintage appears on her right side, and the US Capitol Building on her lower left.

The debuting reverse design is a creation of sculptor Miley Busiek Frost and displays a family of Eagles in a nest. However, the series’ 35th anniversary, in 2021, brought a new reverse to the coin.Jennie Norris, author of the new design, depicted a close-up of a bald eagle’s head. The hooked beak, the staring eye and the bird’s feathers are incredibly detailed as the whole picture is surrounded by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “5 DOLLARS”, “1/10 OZ FINE GOLD” and the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST”.
