In 2021, customers all over the world eagerly awaited the launch of the new reverse design for the American Gold Eagle coins. For the first time since its inception in 1986, the United States Mint decided it was time for some change. Along with the new design, they implemented a reeded edge variation as an anti-counterfeiting measure. This MintCertified™ sealed tube contains 20 coins of the 2022 1 oz American Gold Eagle. They came straight from the mint and have never been opened.

American Gold Eagle Design

In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign some of the country’s coinage that did not require Congress approval. One of the possible coins happened to be the $20 Double Eagle gold coin. Inspired by Ancient Greek coins and the ideals of the American Renaissance, Saint-Gaudens would go on to create one of the most iconic works of art in coinage history. His Lady Liberty design inspired the world from 1907 until 1933, when all gold coinage came into a halt in the country. But in 1986, with the launch of the modern day American Eagle coins program, the United States Mint decided to revitalize the historic design.

The slightly modified current version shows the Goddess Liberty striding forward. The first noticeable aspect is that she holds a lit torch with her right hand stretched ahead. The symbolism behind it is that the ideals of freedom of thought originally cast by the forefathers will continue to guide America’s way to a brighter tomorrow. With her left hand, she holds an olive branch showing the country’s aspiration for peace. In the background, we can see the capitol building with the sun rising behind. A series of six-pointed stars surrounds the whole scene and the word “LIBERTY” arches the upper rim. The mint year “2022” is sculpted to the lower right of this face of the coin.

The designer for the new reverse was Jennie Norris. The artist was able to capture the beautiful countenance of a bald eagle with an earnest look, as if to demonstrate the years and years of experience handed down from generation to generation. Both mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are right above the eagle’s head. On the outer rim we can read the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “50 DOLLARS” and “1 OZ. FINE GOLD”.

Mintage

The 1-troy-ounce American Gold Eagle coins are 22-karat gold, or .9167 fineness. To clarify, the United States Mint adds a small amount of copper and silver to the alloy to make them more resistant. But the coin actually weighs 1.0909 troy ounces (33.931 g). In other words, the copper and silver are added on top of a full 1 troy ounce of pure gold. You will notice that the American Gold Eagle is slightly heavier than other similar 1 Troy oz gold bullion coins in the market, such as the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf or the Gold Britannia coins.

For the specific dimensions, the coin has a diameter of 32.7 mm and a thickness of 2.87 mm. The edges are reeded, but with the new reverse design, the United States Mint added a small chipped smooth part on the edges as an anti-counterfeiting measure.
