The U.S. Mint celebrated the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle Program in 2021 with the special edition of a stunning American Gold Eagle Proof Coin Set.

The American Eagle Program debuted with the first release of Gold Eagles, featuring a one-ounce gold bullion coin. Over time, the U.S. Mint expanded the series to include fractional sizes and proof versions.

This special coin set includes four 22k Proof Gold Eagles weighing 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. Each coin was struck at the West Point Mint and bears the “W” mint mark.

These Proof Gold Eagles also feature the first strike of the newly designed reverse by artist Jennie Norris, which showcases a majestic Bald Eagle. The coins were certified by the NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) and encapsulated with the Edmund C. Moy label.

Edmund C. Moy, the 38th Director of the U.S. Mint (2006–2011), is celebrated as the "Father of the Modern Coin Era." During his tenure, Moy introduced innovative coin designs and oversaw the creation of iconic series like the 24k Gold Buffalo and the 2009 Ultra High Relief coin. His leadership also led to record-breaking gold and silver coins minting, elevating global interest in modern U.S. coinage.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty marches forward with a torch and an olive branch, reflecting the nation's progress toward peace and enlightenment. 

The Capitol Building is imprinted on the lower left, the word “LIBERTY” on top, the coin’s mintage year to the right, and the “W” mint mark below the date. Stars encircle the whole design.

The new reverse design displays the Eagle with a frontal close-up and a penetrating gaze. 

The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are included along with the coin’s face value, weight, and metal content engravings.

An NGC PF-70 Coin 

Third-party services like NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company use the Sheldon Scale as a parameter to appraise and grade coins.

The initials PF stand for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes. It exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. Grade 70 is the highest, attributed to coins with no visible marks.
