In 2020, the United States Mint encountered logistical issues due to COVID-19. In fact, during the early spring, the West Point Mint was forced to shut down entirely. This closure resulted in a complete stoppage of all bullion minting operations, including American Silver Eagle production. In response to these unprecedented challenges, the Mint tasked its branch facilities with striking Silver Eagles.

First, in April, the Philadelphia Mint issued an emergency production run of less than 500,000 Silver Eagles. While these coins were made to satisfy intense bullion demand, they quickly became popular collector items. Sealed 2020(P) boxes are trading for enormous premiums compared to their normal West Mint brethren – and MS70 specimens are commanding an even higher price!

Then, more recently, the U.S. Mint disclosed that its San Francisco facility would produce another 1,000,000 Silver Eagles. Given the massive demand for 2020(P) Silver Eagles, the 2020(S) coins will surely attract tremendous attention as well. It’s considered unusual any time a branch mint strikes bullion Silver Eagles. However, considering this year’s extraordinary events, the 2020(S) Silver Eagles could take on special collector significance.
