2018 South African Gold Krugerrand Coin 1 Oz

SD Bullion is proud to feature this year's additions to one of the longest-running gold coin programs in the world -- the 2018 1 oz Gold Krugerrands. In fact, this gold coin series celebrated its 50th anniversary just last year in 2017.

Just like the coins that preceded it, the 2017 Gold Krugerrands are also struck using 22-karat (.9167 pure) gold. They were first introduced in the year 1967, and and went on to capture almost 90% of the bullion market by 1980 due to the absence of any competition.

These coins are struck by the South African Mint, the official mint of the Republic of South Africa, which manufactures coins on behalf of the South African Reserve Bank. Other than producing South African Rand coins, the Mint also produces currency coins for Zimbabwe and South Sudan.

The portrait of Paul Kruger, the first President of the Republic of South Africa, graces the obverse of this coin. Also imprinted on either side of this portrait are the words ‘South Africa’ and ‘Suid-Africa’ (South Africa in Afrikaans).

The reverse of the coin features the majestic and iconic Springbok Antelope, the national animal of South Africa. This side also displays a stylish rendition of the word 'Krugerrand,' the weight of fine gold in the coin, and its year of issue.
