The resounding success of
Perth Mint’s original Australian Gold Lunar Series coin program, which ran from 1996-2017, prompted the launch of the second iteration in 2008 – Lunar Series II. This series will also feature a total of 12 coin releases – one for every animal in the Chinese zodiac.
Each of these coins is struck using 1/10 troy ounce of 0.9999 pure gold. Moreover, they carry legal tender values of $15 (AUD) as well.
Obverses of these gold coins feature Queen Elizabeth’s right-facing effigy. Renowned sculptor and engraver – Ian Rank-Broadley, created this design in 1998. All legal coinage in Australia bears this effigy of the Queen on their obverse sides – indicating the full backing of the Australian government.
A Labrador Retriever dog is depicted among the rocks on the reverses of these coins, accompanied by a stylized pine tree in the background. The Chinese character for ‘Dog’ is also imprinted on this side.
These 2018 1/10 oz Year of the Dog Gold Coins are perfect candidates for both accumulation of pure gold and completing the Lunar Series II set. Hence, it is bound to be coveted by coin collectors as well as investors.
