2014 NGC MS-70 1/10 oz American Eagle Gold Coin

American Eagle Gold Coins are prized for their gold content and renowned design, created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Miley Busiek. 

First issued by the U.S. Mint in 1986, they were the inaugural coins of the American Gold Eagle Program, which later expanded to feature various sizes and finishes.

The collection comprises a 1/10 oz Gold Eagle. It is legal tender through a 5-dollar face value and is struck from 22-karat gold (.9167 fineness). The coin’s alloy includes 3% silver and 5,33% copper for added durability. Despite the alloy, it contains a full 1/10 oz of pure gold.

The Design

Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse, carrying a torch and an olive branch as she moves forward. Her steps symbolize the nation’s evolution with enlightenment and peace. It also displays the engraving “LIBERTY,” the year of mintage, and the US Capitol Building.

The reverse features a female eagle protecting its hatchling under her wing while the male eagle perches on their nest.

The weight, metal content, and face value are inscribed as "1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD—5 DOLLARS." Additional information reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the mottos "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "IN GOD WE TRUST." 

An NGC MS-70 Coin

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) uses the Sheldon Grading Scale as a parameter to evaluate and attribute grades to coins.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin crafted in the format of a business circulation coin. Since it has never been in circulation, the coin has no sign of wear, tear, or scratching, which grants it a 70 grade.
