2012 PCGS MS-69 DMPL First Strike 5 oz America The Beautiful El Yunque Silver Coin

The US Mint introduced the America The Beautiful Quarter Program in 2010. Until 2021, it delivered five silver coins annually, weighing 5 Troy oz each and featuring America’s natural richness.

The El Yunque Silver Coin was the first coin released in 2012 and the 11th in the series.

El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico was designated a national site in 1903 and is the only tropical rainforest within the U.S. National Forest System. Though it covers a small area, the forest is home to many species and attracts visitors with its consistently warm, tropical climate throughout the year.

SD Bullion sells 2012 5 oz America The Beautiful El Yunque Silver Coins, purchased from the US Mint within 30 days of their official release. They are sealed and certified by PCGS as MS-69 DMPL First Strike coins.

The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR” supplement it.

The reverse features a Coqui tree frog sitting on a leaf and a Puerto Rican parrot behind an epiphyte plant with tropical flora in the background. Inscriptions on this side read “EL YUNQUE,” “PUERTO RICO,” “2012,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

A PCGS MS-69 DMPL “First Strikes” Coin

Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) works independently of sovereign mints. It evaluates and grades coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which rates coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.

PCGS calls “First Strikes” the coins purchased from the original mint within the first 30 days of the official release and submitted to its appraisal.

MS stands for Mint State. Mint State coins are shaped as business coins. Grade 69 is attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.

According to PCGS, DMPL stands for Deep Mirror Proof-Like and refers to coins struck for circulation but with unusual mirror-like fields and frosted design details that are very similar to Proof coins.
