2012 PCGS MS-69 DMPL First Strike 5 oz America The Beautiful Chaco Culture Silver Coin

The America The Beautiful series was introduced in the numismatic world in 2010. It features America’s beauty and historical heritage through five annual silver coins, each weighing 5 Troy oz.

The Chaco Silver Coin is the second release of the 2012 edition and the 12th overall in the series.

Chaco Culture National Historical Park in New Mexico was designated a national site in 1907. It includes Chaco Canyon, notable for its multi-storied public buildings known as "great houses," large circular ceremonial subterranean structures called "great kivas," and unique architecture with many petroglyphs and pictographs. The Chacoan people utilized pre-planned architectural designs, astronomical alignments, geometry, landscaping, and engineering to establish an ancient urban center with impressive public architecture.

SD Bullion sells the 2012 5 oz America The Beautiful Chaco Culture Silver Coin, which was purchased from the US Mint within the first 30 days of its official release. It is graded as MS-69 DMPL coins and sealed in PCGS slabs.

  • Deep mirror-proof-like appearance;
  • Produced by the US Mint;
  • Contains 5 oz of .999 fine silver;
  • The second release of the 2012 edition and the 12th overall in the series;

  • The standard obverse design features George Washington’s bust;
  • The reverse features the Chaco Culture National Historical Park.

The Design

On the obverse, George Washington's bust, designed by John Flanagan in 1932, is an inspired version of the President’s official portrayal, created by William Cousins in 1786.

The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR” are accompanied by the “P” mint mark from the Philadelphia Mint.

The reverse is a view west of two elevated kivas, part of the Chetro Ketl Complex, the north wall of Chetro Ketl, and the canyon's north wall. The image is encircled by "CHACO CULTURE," "NEW MEXICO," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and “2012.”

A PCGS MS-69 DMPL “First Strikes” Coin

Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) works independently of sovereign mints. It evaluates and grades coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which rates coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.

PCGS calls “First Strikes” the coins purchased from the original mint within the first 30 days of the official release and submitted to its appraisal.

MS stands for Mint State. Mint State coins are shaped as business coins. Grade 69 is attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.

According to PCGS, DMPL stands for Deep Mirror Proof-Like and refers to coins struck for circulation but with unusual mirror-like fields and frosted design details that are very similar to Proof coins.
