2009 NGC PF-69 UCAM - One of the First 200 Struck South Africa Gold Krugerrand 4-Proof Coin Set
Gold Krugerrands were the first gold bullion coins aimed at private investments. The South African Mint introduced them in 1967 as a 22k gold coin.
Even though they do not bear face value, they are legal tender fully backed by the South African Government, based on their weight in gold.
This coin set, in particular, comprises four Gold Krugerrand coins in proof finish: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. They were taken among the first 200 coins the South African Mint struck for the 2009 mintage.
Today, SD Bullion offers the 2009 South Africa Gold Krugerrand 4-Proof Coin Set, sealed and certified by NGC as PF-69 UCAM coins.
Product Highlights
- Each coin is evaluated, encapsulated, and graded as PF-69 UCAM by NGC;
- Individually encased in NGC slabs;
- Each coin set contains four South African Gold Krugerrand Proof coins, for a total of 1.85 oz of 22k gold;
- All coins, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and the 1 oz Gold Krugerrands, are proof versions;
- Produced by the South African Mint;
- Taken among the first 200 coins issued;
- Holds legal tender status, backed by the South African Government;
- The obverse features Boer Paul Krugerrand;
- The reverse displays the Springbok Antelope.
The Design
Paul Krugerrand was an essential political and military personality for the country’s independence. Hence, his portrayal stamps the obverse design. The words engraved accompanying his effigy are the country’s name, written in English and Afrikaans.
On the reverse, the Springbok Antelope, a native animal that became a national symbol, is depicted in its natural habitat.
Besides the coin’s name, “KRUGERRAND,” the engravings inform the year of issuance, weight, and metal content in both languages.
An NGC PF-69 Ultra Cameo coin
NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company and other renowned third-party grading services work independently from sovereign mints to certify coins using the Sheldon Scale.
This grading system ranks coins from 1 to 70.
NGC calls “UCAM,” or Ultra Cameo, the Proof Coin, hence PF, produced for collection purposes with deeply mirrored fields and heavily matte design elements on both sides of the coin. The number 69 means the coin's original luster is preserved despite almost invisible minor contact marks or flaws.
