The Design

Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ obverse design portrays Lady Liberty walking forward to the future.

The torch and the olive branch she carries represent light and peace in the outcome. The words “LIBERTY,” the year of mintage, and the US Capitol Building are included.

Miley Busiek designed the reverse illustration, which shows a female eagle protecting its hatchling under her wing while the male eagle perches on their nest.

Additional inscriptions read "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the mottos "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," and information regarding weight, metal content, and face value, which reads "1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD—5 DOLLARS."
