The US Mint produced Double Eagle Gold Coins from 1907 to 1933, containing .9675 Troy oz of gold. These coins featured Saint-Gaudens’ design, which was later adapted for the obverse of the American Gold Eagle coins.

The Design

On the obverse, Augustus Saint-Gaudens depicts Lady Liberty, the feminine embodiment of the nation, striding forward with a torch and olive branch, symbolizing the nation's progress, enlightenment, and peace. 

The image is accompanied by the inscription “LIBERTY” at the top, the Capitol Building engraved on the lower left, and the year of issuance on the right. 

On the reverse, Saint-Gaudens illustrates a Bald Eagle flying above the sun, with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS” above.
