1898-S PCGS MS-63 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin

James B. Longacre, the fourth Chief Engraver of the US Mint, created the design stamped on the Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin. 

The Liberty Double Eagle was the US's official $20 circulating coin from 1850 to 1907, containing .9675 oz of gold.

Several $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins disappeared during the economic collapse of the 1930s, like other Pre-1933 gold coins. When gold spot prices rose, those gold coins were confiscated, hoarded, and melted down because of their gold content.

Those surviving $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins the San Francisco Mint issued carry the “S” mint mark.

The Design

Lady Liberty, who wears a tiara engraved with “LIBERTY,” is stamped on the obverse encircled by the thirteen six-pointed stars that refer to the Thirteen Original Colonies. The year of mintage is inscribed at the bottom rim.

The reverse showcases the Heraldic Eagle with spread wings, the national shield in front of its chest, arrows in its talons, and the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak. 

It also features the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the “S” mint mark, and the coin’s face value of “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
