1898-S NGC MS-62 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin
James B. Longacre was the fourth Chief Engraver of the US Mint, responsible for the design used to feature the Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin, the official $20 circulating coin in the US from 1850 to 1907.
The $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin contains .9675 oz of gold content, and because of that, it was targeted during the economic collapse of the 1930s. When gold spot price rose, several Pre-1933 Gold coins were confiscated, hoarded, and/or melted down, which decreased the surviving population of these coins.
Those surviving $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins the San Francisco Mint issued carry the “S” mint mark.
Today, SD Bullion has 1898-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins in stock, sealed and certified by NGC as MS-62 samples.

The reverse features the Heraldic Eagle encircled by the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” followed by the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
The Eagle was displayed with spread wings, the national shield in front of its chest, arrows in its talons, and the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak.
The “S” mint mark is beneath the shield. The coin’s denomination engraved at the bottom reads “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
An NGC MS-62 Coin
Third-party services, like NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company), use the Sheldon Scale as a parameter to appraise numismatic items, ranking coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.
An MS coin indicates Mint State, a coin issued as a business circulation one. Grade 62 indicates that the coin may present marks and hairlines in focal areas but with an acceptable overall appearance.
