NGC/PCGS AU-58 $1 Liberty Head Gold Coin Type II - Random Year
The Liberty Head Gold Coin was issued as the official one-dollar coin in the United States from 1849 to 1854. Struck by the U.S. Mint, it showcased a design by James B. Longacre and contained .0483 troy ounces of gold.
Longacre designed several U.S. coins, including three versions of the $1 Liberty Gold Coin. The second variety, known as Type II, is often referred to as the “Indian Princess” due to the stylized depiction of Lady Liberty on the obverse. Its intricate design, however, made minting difficult and prone to errors, leading to its discontinuation.
SD Bullion offers authentic $1 Liberty Head Gold Coins of Type II, graded as an AU-58 coin. They may be sealed in either an NGC or a PCGS slab and of assorted mintage years, randomly selected from our inventory, depending on availability.

The Design
The obverse depicts Lady Liberty with a fanciful feathered headdress. It is inscribed with the word “LIBERTY” on the headdress, and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” around the bust. The image is inspired by the Venus Accroupie, also known as the Crouching Venus, a sculpture displayed at the Philadelphia Museum at that time.
The reverse features the coin’s face value and year of issuance, surrounded by “agricultural wheat,” which includes cotton, corn, tobacco, and wheat.
An NGC or a PCGS Au-58 Coin
PCGS—Professional Coin Grading Service and NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company are independent services that appraise and grade coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.
For both services, AU-58 stands for Almost or About Uncirculated and describes a coin in which almost all of the original mint luster remains preserved.
