1897-S PCGS MS-63 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin 

The Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin was the official $20 coin in the US from 1850 to 1907, 

The US Mint produced them containing .9675 oz of gold and imprinted with James B. Longacre’s, the fourth Chief Engraver of the US Mint, design.

Many $20 Liberty Double Eagles vanished during the economic downturn of the 1930s. As gold prices increased, these coins were confiscated, hoarded, and melted down for their gold content. 

Some of the surviving $20 Liberty Double Eagles issued by the San Francisco Mint bear the "S" mint mark.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty’s effigy is adorned with a tiara inscribed "LIBERTY. " The image is encircled by thirteen six-pointed stars representing the original Thirteen Colonies and contains the year of mintage engraved at the bottom rim.

The reverse design features a Heraldic Eagle with spread wings, clutching arrows in its talons. It also has the national shield on its chest and the banner "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on its beak. 

The image also features the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," the "S" mint mark beneath the shield, and the coin's face value of "TWENTY DOLLARS" at the bottom.
